Um tubarão fêmea, da espécie cabeça-chata, foi capturado a um quilômetro da praia, no bairro de Piedade, em Jaboatão dos Guararapes (PE), nesta sexta-feira (3). O animal tem 2,57 metros e mais de 100kg e foi pego pelo barco Sinuelo, que pertence ao projeto Pró-tuba, da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE).

A confirmação da espécie foi feita pelo professor José Carlos Pacheco, da UFRPE. O tubarão foi levado para a universidade e passa por exames.

The U.S. Attorney's office said today that a federal grand jury has indicted six men on charges of criminally catching and selling thousands of undersized juvenile leopard sharks allegedly harvested from the San Francisco Bay.

The indictment, which was returned on Jan. 24 and unsealed Tuesday afternoon, alleges that the pastor of a San Leandro church, four men involved in the aquarium industry, and a fisherman violated the Lacey Act, which makes it a federal offense to knowingly sell or purchase fish, wildlife or plants that were captured in violation of any underlying law.

Near the Nahsholim Beach, volunteers from the rescue team for the Israeli Marine Mammal Research and Assistance Center managed to rescue a 10-meter-long whale shark that had become entangled in a fishing net on Saturday.

Bayawan City, The Philippines (January 27, 2006) Hundreds of residents of Bayawan City in southern Oriental Negros woke up yesterday to the sight of the biggest fish they ever saw following the accidental capture by fishermen of a rare five-meter megamouth shark.

The shark, which was estimated to weigh one ton, was found by fishermen struggling to free itself from a net just off the Bayawan coast, some 100 kilometers south of Dumaguete City.

Dan Aurelia, reporter of Radyo Natin Bayawan, said that the shark was wounded, probably as a result of its struggling.

Mais de 100 milhões de tubarões são capturados todo ano e muitas espécies estão perto da extinção. O comércio de barbatanas para a fabricação de sopa é o fator que mais tem contribuído para a redução das populações mundiais.

A sopa é considerada um luxo no Oriente e atinge valores muito altos. As barbatanas são muito mais valiosas que o restante do tubarão - o que estimula a prática do "finning"- e depois da retirada o animal é atirado ao mar ainda com vida, mas sendo incapaz de nadar, morre.
